The fishery conservation area is one of the largest and species-richest in Skåne. Pike, perch, sea trout, salmon, pike-perch and a variety of carp are among the 36 documented species.

The lower reaches of the River Helgeå correspond more or less to Kristianstads Vattenrike biosphere reserve, stretching from Torsebro through lakes Araslövssjön and Hammarsjön and on to Härnestad, where the river divides: one branch flows to the port of Åhus, the other flows past Yngsjö to meet the sea at Gropahålet. The fishery conservation area also includes the final 10 kilometres of the course of the River Mjöån.

Fishing permits are available from the tourist offices in Kristianstad and Åhus, as well as elsewhere. The conservation area’s homepage has full details of fish and permits.
