Aosehus Castle was built in the middle of the 12th century. It stood on a small island surrounded by a wall and moat, being accessed via a drawbridge.
In 1569 Duke Karl Åhus attacked and destroyed the castle, which was never rebuilt. At the end of the 19th century it was excavated from under the shifting sands that had covered it for hundreds of years.
At one time the castle was 30 m long, 10 m wide and at least two stories high.
