Back in the 1200s a community of monks built a monastery here on a narrow strip of land between the shimmering waters of two lakes. The area have a natural beauty and rich cultural history.
The Danes rebuilt the monastery as a fortress in 1584, but in the 1800s Sweden’s King Karl XV transformed Bäckaskog into a country retreat where he spent many happy days. The stories of Karl XV’s escapades in Skåne are still very much part of local folklore.
The castle grounds, with their herb garden and medicinal plants, are beautifully situated between Lake Ivösjön and Lake Oppmannasjön.
Today Bäckaskog Castle is a a popular destination with restaurant, hotel and conference centre.
